I recently called around to see my friend Mark at his home and I found him out the front of his house looking bothered.  When I asked him what was wrong, he told me he has a decision to make and that he could not make up his mind.  When I asked him what the decision involved, he laughed and said it was a decision regarding a choice between a uPVC window and a timber window.

He had been researching getting windows for his home and had almost decided to get uPVC windows, when a timber window supplier contacted him and gave him a very good quote for timber windows.  Now he did not know what to do.

I asked him, if he had compared the r-values of the two windows.  He said that he had and the uPVC window had much better insulation values.  This was important to him as his house could do with better insulation.

We then talked about the security issues of his home.  He wanted better security and he was aware that the uPVC windows had a muiti-point locking system that he said seemed excellent.

I told him that my timber windows needed a lot of maintenance and that as far as I knew a uPVC window needed very little maintenance.  He agreed that this was true.  ‘uPVC windows really only need to be washed and given some lubrication from time to time’, he said.

We went on to talk about how a uPVC window gives better protection against noise pollution than a timber window and because he lived quite close to the motorway he might be glad of this.  He told me about a site called http://upvcwindowsguide.com that he got a lot of information from.

I looked at my watch and said that it was time I was moving.  I told him I was sorry that I could not help him to make up his mind. ‘What do you mean?’, he laughed. ‘We have spent the whole time pointing out the benefits of a uPVC window.  My mind is made up already’.
