Dogs have not always lived in kennels.
The dog is descended from the wolf and is closely related to the fox, the jackal and the coyote. Archaeological evidence suggests that dogs and wolves diversed some 15,000 years ago. Although there are still some wolf-dog hybrids around, they are considered something of a rarity.
Today’s dogs can be divided into four main sections – hunters, herders, protectors, and companions.
A relatively new category is that of service dogs, i.e. dogs trained to assist people with disabilities. It is solely to the skill of their dog companions that hundreds of disabled people today owe their independence and security.
Although some service dogs have their own dog kennel, most need to be with their masters all the time so they generally live and sleep alongside them.
