You may have seen and heard of green roofs – roofs covered with different forms of vegetation like grass or moss. This type of roofing material is becoming increasingly popular and I will explain why in this article – and why you might want to consider it for garage roofing material.

In recent years, several manufacturers have marketed simple solutions for covering your roof with vegetation. Usually, these products come in mats which require nothing but an underlayment of roofing felt. Most of these are good with roof pitches up to 30 degrees. But why use them? Why a green roof? There are several answers to that question. One advantage is the ability to absorb a lot of rainwater. Instead of having a flood of water rushing down from your roof everytime it rains, a green roof will absorb large quantities before letting go of the excess water. Where does all that water go? To water the vegetation on the roof of course! Whether it is grass or sedum (a mixture of different draught resistant plants), water will be captured by the roots as much needed moisture for the plants. Heavy rainfall will be absorbed in part, with the excess water draining slowly into the guttering. Light rainfall may be absorbed completely by the vegetation. The result? Apart from a beautiful roof, you will spare your sewers a huge volume of water – which is a real advantage if you live in an area with inadequate sewer systems and ever increasing rainfall. You will also experience better heat insulation when it is cold, and better cooling when it is hot. Many traditional garage roofing materials tend to absorb and store heat, and in a large city with many roofs, all this extra accumulated heat can even have an impact on the local climate! In addition, this sort of roof is long-lived – 20 to 30 years easily.

This is equally usable on your home and your garage due to the many advantages mentioned – and it does not cost much either. Why not try it out for garage roofing first?
