There are several different asset classes for the global macro trader. We have equities also known as stocks. We have fixed income also known as bonds. There are commodities like oil and gold. Then we have the currency markets like the Japanese Yen and US Dollar. Real estate rounds out the list of common asset classes.
Apart from the major asset classes we also have a host of other less known assets. Things like art and collectibles are considered an asset class. Statistical arbitrage that isnt looking at any asset class as an actual thing but instead as something that is correlated or otherwise mathematically related to other tradeable assets. Cash which while a currency is more of a place that you put your money when you can’t find a better place for it can also be considered an asset class. Finally we have all of the different sub classes that you can break all of the major groups down into. Things like small and large cap stocks or treasury and municipal bonds.
