If you’re like me, you’ve probably ordered pizza that come in those cardboard boxes or perhaps cupcakes in those cake slice boxes from your local bakery shop. However, you might likely have just taken the boxes themselves for granted. I don’t blame you. I was the same. When I get the pizza or cupcake box in front of me, I’m so hungry, I just think about the pizza or cake itself. I immediately grab the food and throw aside the box.
However, have you ever wondered what pizza boxes are made from? Have you thought about the construction of a pizza box? Why they are made out of the material that they are? If you are an inquisitive person or you are just bored out of your brain and just plain curious, maybe this article can enlighten you a bit. There are actually a number of different types of pizza boxes, but they are all generally made from paper. The reason is because this is a relatively cheap solution as well as being practical.
Furthermore, there are two common construction approaches adopted – paperboard and corrugated pizza boxes. With the former approach, each face of the box is made from a single sheet of thick paper.
With the latter approach, there are three components that make up the wall of the pizza box. Firstly, there are two flat sheets of paper and between them, you have a corrugated sheet of paper. The height of this middle sheet can vary from box to box and the technical term to describe this is the flute. So when you hear people in the pizza box business talk about flutes, they are referring to the thickness of the cardboard walls of the box. It ranges from A-flute to E-flute, with the former being the thickest and the latter being the thinnest.
